-
Environmentally conscious: Made with sustainable, low-impact materials that divert usable minerals from mine waste and return them to creative use.
-
Truly Canadian: Formulated with primarily Canadian-sourced ingredients, featuring raw Maritime clays refined and blended in Fredericton.
-
Strengthens our local supply chain: Every box supports the growth of a Canadian-made clay industry, reducing reliance on imports and long-distance shipping.
-
Distinctly beautiful: A sparkly stoneware with a smooth, porcelainous throwing texture and just enough natural tooth for excellent control and form. Throws orange, fires buff!
-
One-of-a-kind formulation: Developed and tested by Maritime potters—a clay body unlike anything you’ve worked with before.
-
Rooted in place: For the first time, Maritime potters can truly create with local clay—from our own earth to your own hands.

Tests and Preorders go live - Bayside Buff
It's a big day for Nu Ceramics. We are launching shipping--something that's been long anticipated. At the same time, we are launching registration for becoming a tester of Nu Canadian Clay's Bayside Buff EcoClay, our very first attempt at manufacturing clay using local materials. In celebration of all this, we are having a weeklong storewide sales blitz. Use code NUBLITZ10 for 10% off any orders of $150 or more. You can include the Bayside Buff tester in your orders to consolidate and save on shipping costs! Check the link on this page to see if tests are still available.

Announcing our 1st clay! - Bayside Buff
It's time to let the cat of the bag. We need to see what others think about what we've been working on. This means preparing small test pugs of our clay to send out to potters from the Maritimes. We are looking to see how the clay interacts with your glazes and practices. We want to see you throw, handbuild, and sculpt with our clay. For anyone who ends up testing, we hope you share as much knowledge as possible from your experiences. Together, we change how clay is made in Canada. We made a few posts to let people know about our clay and ask for feedback on the name. Potters made it clear that they loved the name Bayside Buff.

First batches & continued testing
We finally streamlined enough of our processing to be able to make our first big batches of our very first clay. This means being able to test out the results on a bigger scale and trying out more glazes. The results from these tests have been beautiful. I'm seeing colours I've never seen before with tried-and-true glazes. Now we need to see what others think.

Refined processes for refinement & processing
It's an exhausting process of designing and building our own equipment. We are making potters' clay in a way that's never been done before. This means we are having to try out traditional refining methods and come up with our own. We are bootstrapping this whole thing, so we can't just buy huge expensive equipment made by international companies. We are making a lot of infrastructure and refining equipment ourselves. This means trying new things and often failing. But over time, we are figuring out the most efficient ways of processing our clay. Big thanks to Jochen Schroer for all his assistance and guidance as an unofficial engineering consultant.

Received raw materials in bulk
It was difficult to find a trucking company who could help us out, but Labrador Trucking came through for us. They were incredibly helpful in figuring out the logistics of shipping tonnes of clay.
July 2025
Set up warehouse & equipment
It took us quite a while to find the right space for setting up our manufacturing space. We settled on a fantastic warehouse in Hanwell with abundant floorspace and several offices. This gives us plenty of room to develop and grow. Reach out if you ever want a tour.

First tests of materials
After receiving some great leads at the October 2024 Ax Ceramics Conference in Sussex, NB, we reached out to a NB mine about a byproduct clay from the processing of their products. Initial tests proved incredibly encouraging. We saw a beautiful stoneware clay that could be sourced locally and sustainably.
