Construction Notes
- Body:
- Euclid single wall top loading kilns are built with 3” insulating brick throughout to ensure superior and sustained structural rigidity while providing optimum heating and cooling characteristics. If desired, bodies (and gutters) can be ordered in sections. Optional double wall construction is available on most models, a practical choice for those who regularly soak at high temperatures. Double wall R-153 and R-200 models are built with 2.5" insulating brick backed up with 1" fibre board; R280 model with 3" brick and 1" board. All Euclid double insulated kilns have 3" thick lids and floors. See Energy Savings?, below, for more information on single vs double wall construction.
- Elements:
- 40 years of making elements has taught us a lot about what works and what doesn't. We've learned that the best way to achieve even heat distribution is to use elements that deliver more heat to the top and bottom of the kiln to compensate for heat lost through the lid and floor.
- Hinges and Lid:
- Euclid's exclusive Halo Lid feels so light it can be raised and lowered easily from almost any position around its perimeter "halo" handle. Made from1/8" solid steel, Euclid hinges are designed to hold the lid in the full upright position without need for chains or lid supports and its unique floating design relieves hinge/body stress by automatically adjusting to kiln brick expansion.
- Energy Savings?
- Claims of realizing significant energy savings from a particular style of kiln construction should be questioned. Comparing a 2.5" brick kiln wall with and without 1" of backup board does give a calculated 32%* difference in heat loss, but this won't provide equivalent energy savings. This number is based on the kiln holding at temperature indefinitely, and it is only part of the equation. Heating up the kiln insulation also uses energy and additional insulation requires increased energy. For typical firings, the reduced heat loss is offset by the increased energy required to heat the kiln.
